St Florian is the Roman Catholic parish church, Sophienkirche is the Lutheran church. While they have separate worship spaces they share the same complex – the Munich-Riem Church Centre. Some commentators dislike this building because of its simplicity and minimalist look, but I like it for precisely those reasons. The church complex was built to serve the needs of parishioners in the neighbourhood of Riem on the edge of Munich. The area was was the site of Munich’s old airport and following its closure in 1992 there was a multi-year redevelopment of the site with the church centre opening in 2005.
