I admire your ability to make photos of people. I’m much too shy to make photos of people unless they are ‘accidental’ like the photo of the old man walking past the J-Pop poster. My street photos tend to focus on buildings rather than people.

I suspect you are no more shy than I am. If you look at my pictures you will see that depending on where I am in the world the kind f pictures I take change. Where people are happy to have their picture taken, like in the Philippines, then I can do it, but where they are more reluctant or even hostile, like Germany, I have far fewer people pictures. The one you mentioned of the old man is a result of one of the ways I get round my reticence about photographing people. If I find an interesting backdrop I’ll wait around and see if anyone interesting walks into the scene. This way people don’t think I’m photographing them – sometimes they’ll even stop and wait for me to take the picture! Even for those of us who aren’t overly confident shooting people on the streets I think there are ways round it without being sneaky about it.
